El Múcaro roams in silence at night
And flaps its wings without making a sound.
In the dark its eyes peer as it takes flight
In search of prey it can snatch off the ground.
Mice, insects, lizards, and a rare small bird,
Unsuspecting, to talons do fall prey.
As they’re swept from their paths by the unheard,
In silence Múcaro takes them away.
Depicted at times as a cute cartoon,
To fool those who don’t know its true essence,
Which only comes out to dance with the moon
And to show the hunt as its quintessence.
To all the small wanderers in the dark
Heed that you cannot see and cannot hark.
