Areíto sounds rejoice through Borikén
As múcaros, carey, and sprites all chant.
Maracas shake to güiros now and then
While cucubanos sparks begin to grant.
At dusk in a canoa they escape
And we the mimes closely follow them,
Through cayos glide, beneath the mangroves’ drape,
We perch to praise the lovers from a stem.
Evoked cemí by mortal lover’s lust,
In paradise we dance by moonlit night.
Cokí and Atabey’s love fills earth’s bust,
Inspiring creatures like us songs to write.
Divine notes on the yukayeke rain:
Casabe for conuco’s soil and grain.

Young pilgrim under palm trees dreams of earth.
She feels his love and Atabey dreams back.
A small Taino prince is now her mirth.
I, Juracán, will turn their skies to black,
Then rip the tribe’s bohíos from the ground.
Come, guaraguaos! Feast and bring them rest!
These star-crossed lovers will in winds be drowned,
For I will drown the pain within my breast.
Macana swing at this Cacique’s son,
The only heir to his papá’s guanín.
Immortal Atabey, beware this fun
Before my temper wrecks this isle, my queen.
To hurt your love was not my plan, but pain
With rage has joined to split my heart in twain.
